Tom joined the UNC faculty as chair of the former Speech Communication department in the Fall of 2003. Prior to that, most of his career was spent at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, where he served in positions such as chair of Communication Studies, interim chair of Modern & Classical Languages, and Division Director for the Fine Arts & Humanities. He has a B.S. from St. Cloud State University (MN), M.A.s from the Univeristy of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and from the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Tom is the author of numerous professional articles, book chapters, and the 2002 book Sturgis Stories: Celebrating the People of the World’s Largest Motorcycle Rally. He is honored to be the first director of UNC’s School of Communication.
