Director’s Message
Welcome to the School of History, Philosophy, and Political Science at the University of Northern Colorado. We are pleased that you are considering a major or minor in one of these three disciplines, for each offers something special and unique to the student. History, for example, serves as the custodian of the human record, and consequently forms the indispensable support for all other areas of knowledge in the humanities and the social sciences; philosophical study necessitates that the student reflect about fundamental ideas and beliefs so that these may be clarified while a determination is made regarding their essential truth or falsehood. The study of Political Science reveals how societies are organized and change over time; this is accomplished by examining public policy, values, and political thinking. These three areas, posed as they are, on the cusp of knowledge, insist on critical and analytical thinking, writing excellence, and the complete understanding of research technique and methodology.
The School’s faculty is drawn from among the best American universities. Virtually all have experience in publication or grant-writing. Their most important role, however, is teaching. The student-faculty ratio is very favorably disposed toward students, especially in upper division classes. Students are encouraged to participate in each program’s activities, and there is a strong, positive relationship between faculty and students. At present, there are 640 majors total in the three programs.
Our expectations are high, but students more often than not attain them through study and thought. Please examine our programs on the appropriate Web pages, listed on the left. Your interest in any one of the three programs is encouraged through contact with me, or through individual program offices and coordinators. We hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Barry Rothaus, Ph.D.
Director
